Holly’s Notice:

Dear Book Lovers,

We have homeschooled for 31 years! Collecting books and curriculum is every homeschool mom’s fettish and I was no exception. But now they must go. This Saturday we are having a big sale.

Three and 1/2 birds are out of the nest, soaring to the winds of God’s Spirit as He directs and propels them in life. We are overwhelmed with His faithfulness and grace. But now it is time to make room on my sagging shelves for the books MOM is into, and you can benefit.

These are the books that propelled our sons to pursue great adventures. One went to Darfur to feed starving refugees, another to Israel to deliver goods to the poor. One started his own radio show and now works in the Big Apple, while another composes great music and designs websites. One jumps from cliffs borne on the wind with a wing suit while another has built his own forge for casting his sculptures and carves amazing pipes by design. All have traveled the world visiting ancient ruins and modern capitals, from the Swiss Alps to the deserts of Sinai.

Come check out what great find you can use to enhance your homeschool library. Prices for great books like these will be lower than any book fair. In this collection you will find topics ranging from sciences, history, math, literature, fiction, poetry, Bible…. All of the fabulous Henty books!

I’ll be giving away copies of my favorite homeschool ideas for every purchase of $25 or more.

The proceeds of the sale will be split between our new granddaughter (joining our family September 15ish) and my new favorite missionary to backpackers in New Zealand, Kathryn Hodges.

What? Curriculum and books sale
When? Saturday August 6th, 9 – noon
Where? At the Drakes, 279 Deer Crossing, Todd, NC

Hope to see many of you on Saturday. Call if you need directions to our home. 828 297 7491

Wild blessings abound!

There will be a parent information meeting at Boone United Methodist church with Ronnie Wise on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at 4 PM. This meeting will be an opportunity for parents and students to meet Ronnie, hear his plans for the Chorale, and ask any questions they might have.

The first choir rehearsal will be at 4 PM on Wednesday, August 31, 2011, at Boone United Methodist.

This High School Chorale is open all students in 8-12 grades in the High Country. This year there will be no tuition charged for participating in the Chorale. (There will be a $20 registration fee required each semester.)

We live in the mountains; inclement weather is a fact of life. The BRTC is committed to making wise decisions about weather-related cancellations.

How do we make the decision whether or not to cancel classes? Well, at this point in time, our board members live in several parts of the county. Usually, we start the decision-making process the night before. If the roads are already extremely hazardous or if we are already in the middle of the storm, all efforts will be made to cancel classes the night before. In all cases, we do our best to post a decision by 7 AM.

Please remember how varied our terrain and weather is up here in the mountains. It’s possible that your part of the county is perfectly clear and the roads look completely safe to you while your student’s instructor can’t even get down his or her driveway. Sometimes the roads are clear in outlying areas and downtown Boone is entirely impassable. We are always endeavoring to make the safest choice for you and your students as well as our instructors.

We will post any closures no later than 7 AM in the following three places:

Ray’s Weather Closing Page (remember that we are listed under Businesses, NOT schools)

Go Blue Ridge dot Net

Blue Ridge Teaching Co-op Weather Closure Page (We will post any closures at the top of the page)

One of our “rules of thumb” is that if Appalachian State University cancels classes, then the BRTC will also cancel classes.

Further things to note:

When classes are canceled for the day, all classes are canceled.

Any classes held off-site (NOT at Crosspoint Community Church) are canceled at the discretion of the instructor. Please contact your instructor if you wish to know whether your off-site class has been canceled.

We do our best NOT to cancel classes. If your class is canceled, please contact your instructor for information on make-up work.

If cancellations become excessive in a given semester, the board will meet to determine if make-up classes need to occur. Most of our instructors are very resourceful in coping with occasional weather closures. We are, after all, homeschoolers! Please remember that your instructor’s fee is not based strictly on “seat time” but rather on a defined body of knowledge/information for the course. Our instructors will do their best to keep up with their course syllabus regardless of the weather.
