The Blue Ridge Teaching Cooperative is a network of home-schooling parents who are pooling their resources and experience to provide excellent academic and practical tutorial instruction in selected subject areas at or above the high-school level to home-schooling students in the Boone, NC area.
We are a support to home school parents—we are NOT a school. This means that the bulk of our children’s education is still taking place at home. This is a very important distinction. We help bring teaching parents and resources together with students, providing them with a high level of specialized instruction.
The classroom time is intended to provide students with experienced instruction in a tutorial fashion, interaction with other students and opportunities to ask questions and express what they are learning. Classroom time, however, will, in general, represent a relatively small fraction of the time that a student is expected to spend in the study of a particular subject. Students are to use tutors as valuable resources to accelerate, deepen and broaden their understanding of a subject.
Our class schedule will offer supplemental classes one or two days of the week, following a 15 or 16-week semester. Some courses will require a full two semesters to cover the material. Tutors will provide a detailed syllabus for each course that will give parents and students a clear idea of the scope of subject matter covered and the expectation from the student (and teacher). Guidelines (including course schedules and costs) along with Parent, Student and Instructor commitments are outlined in the remainder of this document.
We are always open to improvement, so please do not hesitate to make suggestions (BlueRidgeTeachingCoop@gmail.com). We look forward to serving with you in this endeavor.
